Of Monster Trucks and Best-Laid Plans
May. 4th, 2017 11:03 amMy Prius was run over by a monster truck this weekend.
Yep, you read that right. No-one was hurt, and it seems to have been entirely without malice...the young dudes were out driving around in their new half-ton with monster truck wheels and just sort of...miscalculated I guess? And went right over the front of our poor wee car, shearing the front bumper entirely off from above. As we weren't even in the car at the time--I was home, and M and Kitten were out for ice cream and had left the car legally parked in, you know, a parking lot--we are pretty unquestionably not at fault, and the insurance company is being uncharacteristically good to us.
After a couple of days of scrambling (M has a 20-minute commute that takes over an hour by bus, because transit here is not the best for anything but to and from downtown) we now have a rental to get us where we need to go. It's shiny, white, suburban, and extremely aggressive on the accelerator. I have dubbed it 'The White Rabbit' and when we are out in public together, I try to pretend we don't know each other.
On the other hand, the neighbours keep coming over to compliment us on our new car, so I guess my fondness for the battered grey Prius with the busted back headlight cover and fender (from that time M. backed into a tree that was looking at us the wrong way) is not universal. Some people's taste, man. *shakes head sadly*
Anyhow, it's been a strange sort of week ever since, probably not for that reason but it was an odd start. My head has been very very deep into the intensive re-plotting stage of my novel, to the point where I keep sitting down to work on it for half an hour and emerging when my stomach forces me to bolt down a late lunch and run up the hill to collect my daughter.
Today it's sunny and I seemed to have flipped the switch that says it's time to cook all the things, play the cello, and go for a swim. I guess that's balance of a sort? What is a schedule, anyway?
